What Is a Good Distance for a Run

Figuring out the best distance to run can be challenging, especially if you are a new runner. There are a number of different elements to consider, including your physical fitness, local terrain and climate. However, focusing first on your fitness will help you determine the distance that is the best base distance for you.

Build Your Fitness

Before attempting a run at any distance, it's important that you first build your fitness level. In his book, "Fitness Running," Richard Brown recommends that you evaluate your fitness to ensure that you can walk at least 30 minutes continuously for at least three times a week before you start a running program. Once you have established your walking ability, you can start running.

Think In Minutes, Not Miles

Many new runners falter in their running programs because they think they need to achieve a certain distance in order to be successful. Once you build up your walking time, integrate running by setting aside minutes specifically for running. Each day, you can build on this so that your entire 30-minute walk becomes a run. Once you've done this, you can evaluate your speed and determine the best distance for you.
